Connecting With The Past
Larry Wolff recently
found at a garage sale a 1978 edition of “Old Brooklyn in Early
Photographs 1865 – 1929”
While
browsing through the pages he noticed a familiar picture. One that was
always on his grandmother’s dresser. After confirming that the photo in
the book and the one on the dresser were the same he made some family
inquires.
The
snappy looking gentlemen in the photo turned out to be his
Great-Grandfather, Peter Meehan, born 1859 and born in the County of
Leithrim.
He was
the driver of the last horse drawn delivery wagon in Brooklyn NY. Peter
Meehan delivered residential packages for the “Namm Store” located at
Fulton and Hoyt Streets.
The building itself, where this photo was taken, was the Brooklyn
landmark “Alhambra Apartment House” located at Nostrand Ave between
Macon and Halsey Street.

Renaming of Kings
Highway in Hauppauge |

Katherine Klahn
Deputy Public Information Officer
Islip Town
Please join me, Suffolk County Legislator John Kennedy and the Ryan
family in remembering Sgt. Michael W. Ryan with the symbolic naming of
Kings Highway in Hauppauge in his name.
A ceremony was held in front
of the HYO Complex, Kings Highway,
Hauppauge on Tuesday, September 1st .
Michael passed away from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma because of his brave
work at the World Trade Center in the weeks after 9/11. Before becoming
sick, Michael enjoyed his work as a New York City Police Officer, and
especially enjoyed his role as Vice President of Hauppauge Football at
the HYO Complex, which is why the Town-owned streets in front of the
complex will be symbolically dedicated to his memory.
Regards,
Phil Nolan
Supervisor, Islip Town

Definition of a Veteran
A veteran - whether active duty, retired,
national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life,
wrote a blank check made payable to
"The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my
life."
That is Honor, and there are way too many
people in this country who no longer understand it.

Military Donation Gift Drive
MILITARY COLLECTION
On Sunday, January 20,
2008 , and Wednesday, April 23, 2008, numerous volunteers showed up at the Division 7, Hibernian Hall in
East Islip to assist in the packaging of items. These items will be
shipped to various servicemen and women serving in Iraq.
The items collected were; Wipes and Wet Ones, Playing Cards, Crossword
Puzzles, Hand held games, Jam or Jelly in Plastic Jars, Peanut Butter in
Plastic Jars, Foot powder, Crackers, Writing paper and pens, Sealed
Chapstick, Trail Mix, Disposable Cameras, Oreo Cookies in Plastic
Containers, Chocolate Chips in Plastic Containers, Beefy Jerky, 'Power
Bars' and
Rosaries.
Claudia Troiano and Gerri Muligan, who chaired the event remarked, …”I
want to thank you all for a fabulous turnout today in support of our
troops! It was awesome to see so many people, so many ages, working
together.
We sent out to 56 soldiers, plus an extra 10 boxes to each of the
lieutenants with extra to share with their units. We did deplete most of
our inventory and will need to replenish for the next one, with will be
the second week of March. Please note that we will have to do some fund
rising to raise money for postage also. Special thanks to the Ancient
Order of Hibernians...for their generous contributions, the use of the
facility, and the extra people to help! They have generously offered to
store our leftover inventory and let us conduct our next ‘packout’
there. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Claudia also provided a list of soldiers in case anyone would like to
write to them. They love hearing from home. However she cautioned that,
…”Please tell your children not to expect letters back. Sometimes it
happens, but not often.”
The next group of soldiers will probably be some of our own, those who
recently left from Brentwood.
She reminded everyone to keep them all in your prayers. |

BLOCK
PARTY
On Saturday July 9, 2005,
Division 7 hosted a "Block Party" for the delegates of the New York State
Convention.
Entertainment in the street was
supplied by Jerry Finley, along with Irish step dancing
performed by dancers from the Hunt School of Dance. Additionally our own
Roisin Dubh Pipe Band performed as well.
All the delegates were unanimous
in that not only did they have a great time but were overwhelmed by the
appearance of the statue of Our Lady of Knock.
Division 7 members who worked on
providing the support for this occasion should be proud of their
accomplishment.
